Like other magnetic pickups, this one attaches at the end of the fingerboard. With the preamp (passive; no batteries required), you can blend in the sound of an already existant piezo pickup. For bowing, the magnetic pickup can be muted by a switch.
Michael Zadow offers his pickups custom-made for your individual bass’ measurements for the same price.
Unlike other magnetic pickups (like Fender Precision-bass-pickups or Schaller), this pickup sounds more acoustically. For Rockabilly/Bluegrass slap-bass-players, the second channel is very useful to add a fingerboard piezo-pickup.

Seit 3 Jahren spiele ich mit dem Magnet-Pickup von Michael Zadow und
bin davon restlos begeistert.Er lässt für mich keine Wünsche offen,da
er sowohl bei pizzicato als auch bei arco alle Frequenzen sauber überträgt und auch bei großer Lautstärke keine Rückkopplung entsteht.
Ich benutze ihn in der “Bigband der Deutschen Oper Berlin” und in verschiedenen Combobesetzungen (u.a.”Triologic”) und in meiner bisher fast 40jährigen Praxis als Kontrabassist habe ich noch keinen besseren Pickup finden können.Er muss allerdings penibel genau angebracht und justiert werden, damit die einzelnen Saiten gleichstark abgenommen werden.Im Bestellformular gibt es eine Skizze, die man ausfüllen sollte und nach der Michael Zadow den Pickup passend für den jeweiligen Bass einrichtet.Bei Bedarf kann man die einzelnen Saiten noch mit einem Steckschlüssel nachjustieren, was aber selten nötig sein wird.

For three years now I have been playing with the Michael Zadow Magnet Pickup – and must say I am over the moon about it. Whether you play pizzicato or arco it works cleanly and accurately over the whole sonic range, with no danger of feedback even at high volume – let’s face it, what more can you ask for? I use it when playing in the “Big Band of the Deutsche Oper Berlin!” and in various other groups (such as “Trilogic”). With nearly 40 years experience in the business, I have not found a better pickup. Of course, it must be fixed and adjusted precisely so that each string can be picked up equally. On the order form you can make a sketch of the bass for which you want it and Michael Zadow will produce the pickup accordingly. If required, you can always adjust individual strings with a spanner although that is seldom necessary. I cannot recommend the Zadow pickup highly enough!
