Ashworth

This bridge is designed for use with EUBs. The manufacturer discribes it as an “intelligent bridge, which fools the pickup-elements into thinking there is a hollowbody underneath”. This is achieved by mounting the piezo elements into a resonant housing.

This pickups are single (AJ 301) and twin (AJ 301P) sensors which fit in the wing slots of the bridge. Alun Jones from Ashworth told me that “they compare the sound between the upper and lower surface of the slot for feedback cancelling”. He uses a special sort of piezo element, which has multiple layers and is configured with special resilient acoustic contacts.

I have been using the Ashworth AJ 401 bridge/pickup for about 6 years on my EUB Orca Bass which is manufactured by Starfish Designs in Scotland.
I have nothing but praise for both the Pickup and the fantastic workmanship of the bass. I play mostly jazz these day and use Obligato strings which are quite easy on bowing. Together with Gallien-Krueger amplification I think I have found the combination and sound I have been searching for for years.
